Interactive map: Canadians missing and rescued at sea

TORONTO - The U.S. Coast Guard has called off its search for a Canadian woman believed to have gone overboard on a Bahamas cruise.

Fariba Amani, 47, disappeared on Wednesday, Feb. 29 as the Bahamas Celebration was travelling from Freeport, Bahamas to Palm Beach, Fla.

Search and rescue crews trolled the waters between Freeport and the Port of Palm Beach for about 84 hours, covering an area of nearly 7,300 square miles (18,900 square kilometres).

They ended their search the night of March 1.

The boyfriend of Amani says he last saw her early Wednesday as the Bahamas Celebration was returning to Florida. He alerted the ship's crew, prompting the search.

Last month, three Albertans—including a nine-year-old boy— were rescued at sea just after a swell capsized their sailboat. The boat was reported disabled in "extreme conditions" and the "Horizon Reliance" arrived just as it sank.
