TORONTO - Fire crews were still trying to put out hot spots late Monday after knocking down a four-alarm fire at a public storage facility in west-end Toronto. Most of the fire had been contained by afternoon, officials said, but some small areas were still burning.
A firefighter inside the building fell from the third floor to the second, resulting in a "mayday" call being made and a rapid intervention team being deployed. Fire officials later said the unidentified fireman was OK and was able to walk out of the building under his own steam.
The fire broke out this morning around 6:15 a.m. in a commercial building near Dupont and Dundas Street West.
Just after 2:30p.m., a "mayday" call was put out by Toronto Fire Services, as one of the floor in the storage facility gave out - causing one firefighter to fall.
Toronto Fire services had suggested there is a possibility that the facility consumed by a 5-alarm fire could collapse.
People living in nearby homes were asked to leave. Also students in St. Joseph Catholic School on Pelham Ave. are being moved to a nearby school for safety.
Parents may call 416-393-5291 for further updates.
Several streets are off limits as a result including Pelham Avenue, Osler Street and part of Uxbridge Avenue.
The fire is also disrupting GO train service in on the Kitchener line and at least one train has been cancelled.
